Guatapé is about two hours east of the city, and the rock is the reason you go. From 1 January 2026 the Piedra del Peñol climb is a flat 35,000 COP, and it is about 740 steps. Buses leave Terminal del Norte. A tour often adds a boat on the reservoir. I would treat the stairs like a workout: water, slow pace, no heroics at altitude.
Getting there

Go early on a weekday to beat the crowds at the rock.
- Bus: from Terminal del Norte (Caribe Metro station). Ask to get off at La Piedra, or go on to Guatapé town.
- Tour: pickup in the city, often with a boat trip and lunch. See activities.
- Driving: about two hours, depending on traffic.
The climb

Since 1 January 2026 the climb costs a flat 35,000 COP. It is about 740 steps to the summit, with views over the reservoir. Take water and go slowly. You are at altitude, even if the steps look friendly from the bottom.
Guatapé town

The town is known for its zócalos, colourful relief panels along the base of houses. Wander the Calle de los Recuerdos and the waterfront. It is pretty without needing me to pile on adjectives.
Tips
- Weekends and holidays are busy.
- Go early. Afternoon storms are common.
- Last buses back can fill up, so check times before you linger over a second coffee.
