Medellín is mild because it sits at about 1,500 m in the Aburrá Valley, not because the weather is doing you a special favour. Stay in El Poblado or Laureles, ride the Metro (4,400 COP a single trip in 2026), and leave a day for Guatapé. You land at José María Córdova (MDE) in Rionegro. The airport bus is 20,000 COP.

Medellín at a glance

Medellín is Colombia’s second city: a valley of red-brick hillsides linked to the centre by Metro and cable cars, with mild weather all year.

Where to stay

El Poblado has the most hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Laureles is flatter, leafier and more local. I would not overthink a first trip: Poblado, then decide if you want the quieter side of the river. See where to stay in Medellín and El Poblado vs Laureles.

The Metro, with its Metrocable and tram lines, is clean, cheap and the best way to cross the city. Locals are proud of it, and they are right. See getting around Medellín and the Metrocable guide.

Safety

Medellín has changed hugely since the 1990s, but theft and drugging in nightlife settings are real risks. Read is Medellín safe? before you go out. My German side wants a booked car home. My Colombian side still wants to stay out for the music. Do both: go out, then leave in a car you booked.

When to go

Any month works. The city is mild all year. August brings the Feria de las Flores, which is the festival I would plan a trip around if I had to pick one. See best time to visit.
